Juveniles often associated with isolated patches of branching coral or rubble of shallow sandy protected areas. Adults occur singly or in pairs on the slopes of deep lagoon or seaward reefs (Ref. 37816, 48637). Often hostile towards divers and may attack unprovoked when caring for eggs (Ref. 48637). Feed on sea urchins, coral, crabs and other crustaceans, mollusks and tube worms. Oviparous (Ref. 205). Phân bố tại các đầm phá, rạn san hô hướng biển và sườn rạn san hô kín phía trong. Cá con thường sống quanh các đám san hô phân nhánh mọc đơn độc hoặc vùng nền đáy vụn san hô ở những khu vực nông, cát và được bảo vệ. Cá trưởng thành sống đơn độc hoặc theo cặp trên sườn của các đầm phá sâu hoặc rạn san hô hướng biển. Thường hung dữ với thợ lặn và có thể tấn công vô cớ khi đang bảo vệ trứng. Thức ăn bao gồm cầu gai, san hô, cua và các loài giáp xác khác, động vật thân mềm và giun ống. Loài đẻ trứng.
