Mô tả hình thái

Relatively uncommon in patch reefs and coral slopes near sandy areas of clear lagoon and seaward reefs. Juveniles occur in sandy and weedy inner reefs, adults on clear lagoons and seaward reefs (Ref. 9710). Juveniles inshore, usually on muddy substrates and often estuarine. Adults on deep slopes and range to outer reefs, sometimes swimming high above the substrate or just below the surface. Pelagic larvae may disperse over great distance and juveniles occur in subtropical zone (Ref. 48637). Enter estuaries (Ref. 4833). Considered as the giant among puffers reaching a total length well in excess of a meter.EN · FishBase/GBIF

Tương đối ít phổ biến ở các rạn san hô đốm và sườn san hô gần các khu vực cát của đầm phá nước trong và rạn san hô hướng biển. Cá con xuất hiện ở các rạn san hô vùng trong có cát và nhiều rong tảo, cá trưởng thành sống ở đầm phá nước trong và rạn san hô hướng biển (Ref. 9710). Cá con sống ven bờ, thường ở nền đáy bùn và hay gặp ở vùng nước lợ cửa sông. Cá trưởng thành sống ở sườn dốc sâu và phân bố đến các rạn san hô ngoài khơi, đôi khi bơi ở tầng nước cao phía trên nền đáy hoặc ngay dưới mặt nước. Ấu trùng sống ở tầng nổi có thể phát tán đi khoảng cách rất xa và cá con xuất hiện ở vùng cận nhiệt đới (Ref. 48637). Có đi vào các vùng cửa sông (Ref. 4833). Được coi là loài khổng lồ trong số các loài cá nóc, có thể đạt chiều dài tổng cộng vượt quá một mét.
