Loài cá này chỉ phân bố ở môi trường nước ngọt, cụ thể là tại ba hồ kiến tạo ở miền trung Sulawesi (đặc điểm là các hồ sâu, vách dốc, có thảm thực vật thủy sinh và hệ cá bản địa thường chỉ giới hạn ở các vùng ven hồ nông). Tại hồ Matano, cá thường được tìm thấy ở vùng nước rất nông, độ sâu dưới 50 cm, chủ yếu ẩn nấp giữa các lớp sỏi. Ngoài ra, loài này còn sinh sống tại các vịnh nông, đáy bùn, được che chắn khỏi gió và sóng, hoặc ở những nơi có thảm thực vật dày đặc như ruộng lúa hoặc các vũng nước trâu đầm có chứa tảo Chara.

Restricted to freshwater, in three tectonic lakes of central Sulawesi (steep-sided, deep lakes with aquatic vegetation and with native fish fauna generally restricted to the shallow sides) (Ref. 43716). Usually found in very shallow water in Lake Matano, in less than 50 cm depth, typically among pebbles (Ref. 43716). Also in shallow, muddy bays protected from wind and wave disturbance, or where vegetation is thick such as rice paddy or <i>Chara</i>-filled water buffalo wallows (Ref. 43716).
