Sinh sống ở các rạn san hô ven bờ; thường được phát hiện khi lặn tại các khu vực kín gió trong các vịnh hoặc đầm phá, nơi loài cá này thường ngụy trang rất kỹ trong các thảm tảo, cỏ biển hoặc bọt biển. Các gai vây có chứa độc tố. Phân bố dọc theo các rìa lục địa hoặc các đảo gắn liền với lục địa, không xuất hiện ở các đảo đại dương thực sự.
