Phân bố tại các đầm phá nước nông trong và các rạn san hô hướng biển; ưa sống ở các vùng đáy cát gần các bãi san hô hoặc rìa rạn. Cá trưởng thành thường sống ở các rạn san hô nước sâu hoặc khu vực xác tàu đắm, thường ở độ sâu hơn 30 mét. Cá con sống ở vùng ven bờ trên các rạn san hô vụn hoặc các mỏm đá nhỏ trên nền đáy hở. Thức ăn bao gồm nhím biển, động vật giáp xác, động vật thân mềm, cá chết, động vật có vây hoặc san hô. Là loài đẻ trứng và có tập tính một vợ một chồng. Cũng được khai thác bằng lưới quây. Được thương mại dạng tươi sống và phơi khô ướp muối.
