Loài này phân bố tại các khu vực có nhiều rong và nền đáy cát của các rạn san hô ven biển. Chúng thường xuất hiện trên nền đáy bùn trống trải, từ vùng cửa sông nông đến các vùng biển sâu ngoài khơi. Cá đực có xu hướng kéo dài cơ thể theo độ tuổi. Đây là loài có tập tính đơn phối (monogamous).
