Sinh sống tại các rạn san hô và rạn đá ven bờ. Loài này cũng thường xuất hiện ở các vùng bùn cát ngoài khơi. Cá non phân bố ở vùng nước đại dương, ngay tại hoặc gần tầng mặt; cá non có thể bơi vào các vùng nước lợ cửa sông. Phân bố ở tầng trung - đáy. Thức ăn bao gồm các loài động vật không xương sống ở đáy. Đã ghi nhận số lượng lớn cá non trong dạ dày của cá đầu bẹt.
