Phân bố tại các rạn san hô vùng nước nông gần khu vực đáy cát hoặc thảm rong tảo. Thường gặp ở các vùng cửa sông và vùng vịnh bùn kín gió; cá con sinh sống trong các khu rừng ngập mặn và có xu hướng di chuyển vào hạ lưu các con suối (Ref. 9407, 48637). Sống đơn độc (Ref. 90102). Cá trưởng thành sống ở độ sâu trung bình, thường nằm vùi trên nền bùn vào ban ngày (Ref. 48637).

Mô tả loài. Vây lưng: 10 tia vây mềm; Vây ngực: 17 – 19 tia vây mềm; Vây hậu môn: 9 – 10 tia vây mềm; Vây đuôi: 8 tia vây mềm. Cơ thể hình thuôn dài và gần như hình trụ qua mặt cắt ngang với phần đầu và lưng rộng. Đường viền lưng khum tròn; đường viền đầu thẳng đến hơi lõm với mõm tù. Toàn bộ cơ thể và đầu, ngoại trừ môi, phần sau cuống đuôi và các vây, đều được bao phủ bởi các gai nhỏ. Cơ quan khứu giác nằm trước mắt với 2 thùy thịt hình thành từ sự phân nhánh của một gốc đơn. Tất cả các vây đều tròn. Có các đường màu trắng bao quanh mắt.
