Phân bố tại các đầm phá nước trong và vùng rạn san hô hướng về phía biển. Thường được tìm thấy sống chung với hải miên (sponge) ở các độ sâu khác nhau. Ưa sống ở những khu vực kín sóng như trong các hốc của rạn san hô chết hoặc còn sống. Sống đơn độc hoặc bắt cặp. Thức ăn chủ yếu gồm hải miên, giun nhiều tơ (polychaetes), tảo dạng sợi và một lượng nhỏ động vật có vỏ tay (tunicates), động vật giáp xác, động vật da gai và san hô.
