Sinh sống tại các rạn san hô vùng ven bờ và vùng cửa sông (Ref. 9710). Tạo một hố trũng nông bằng cách dùng vây ngực múc cát hoặc bùn đắp xung quanh hai bên cơ thể. Nằm bất động trên các khu vực đáy cát. Hoạt động về đêm và thường di chuyển lên phía trên các rạn san hô (Ref. 48635). Được ghi nhận trong Sách Kỷ lục Guinness là loài cá có độc tính cao nhất (Ref. 6472). Sống đơn độc giữa các đống đá vụn san hô và đá, cực kỳ khó phát hiện (Ref. 90102).
