Diagnosis: The species has a deep, robust body with a short, blunt snout and a large, rounded head. It is characterized by a mottled red to brown or greenish-brown coloration. The iris has reddish bands, and the lips exhibit light and dark bars. Adult individuals have branched upper pectoral rays, a posterior lacrimal spine, and a fused first and second suborbital ridge forming a single ridge. Two blunt spines are present behind the orbit level on the suborbital ridge. The occipital pit is well-developed. The species is typically associated with rocky, pebbly substrates and often hides in reef crevices for camouflage.EN · FishBase/GBIF

Sinh sống ở vùng đáy đá ven bờ và trong các vịnh kín trên nền đáy bùn cát lẫn mảnh vụn. Sống đơn độc trong các hốc khe của rạn san hô ven bờ ở độ sâu đến 15 m.

Chẩn loại: Loài cá này có thân sâu, chắc nịch với phần mõm ngắn, tù và đầu lớn, tròn. Đặc điểm nhận dạng là cơ thể có màu từ đỏ đốm đến nâu hoặc nâu lục. Mống mắt có các dải màu đỏ, môi có các vạch sáng và tối. Cá trưởng thành có các tia vây ngực phía trên phân nhánh, gai lệ xương sau và một gờ dưới ổ mắt thứ nhất và thứ hai hợp nhất tạo thành một gờ duy nhất. Có hai gai tù phía sau mức ổ mắt trên gờ dưới ổ mắt. Hố chẩm phát triển tốt. Loài này thường gắn liền với nền đáy đá, đá cuội và thường ẩn nấp trong các hốc rạn để ngụy trang.
