Mô tả hình thái

D X-XI. 15-17; A II. 13-14. Số vảy đường bên 38-43 (số vảy có lỗ 38-43). Tổng số lược mang 19-22. Cơ thể có màu đen đến màu cam với 3 dải màu trắng (dải thứ nhất ở sau mắt, dải thứ 2 ở giữa vây lưng và dải thứ 3 trên cuống đuôi). Biến hình màu đen hoặc màu cam của loài này phụ thuộc vào loài hải quỳ mà chúng cộng sinh với.

Sinh thái & Dinh dưỡng

Mẫu vật thường được phát hiện chủ yếu trong hệ sinh thái rạn san hô, đầm phá ven bờ, ở độ sâu 3-40m; Sống cộng sinh với một số loài hải quỳ (Entacmaea quadricolor, Heteractis aurora, H. crispa,..); Cá thể trưởng thành sống theo cặp; Thức ăn là các loài động vật chân chèo, thực vật phù du; Cặp đôi trong mùa sinh sản, làm tổ đẻ trứng; Con đực chăm sóc ổ trứng đến khi nở (Moyer, J.T.,A. Nakazono, 1978).

Phân bố

Việt Nam: Nơi phát hiện mẫu vật: Hòn La, Cồn Cỏ, Hải Vân - Sơn Trà, Vịnh Nha Trang, Hòn Cau,... Thế giới: Vùng biển Tây Thái Bình Dương.

Giá trị kinh tế

Có giá trị cao trên thị trường cá cảnh (được nuôi nhiều trong các bể cá cảnh gia đình); giá trị làm thực phẩm không cao. Khai thác thủ công bằng cách lặn dùng vợt để bắt.

Cá trưởng thành sinh sống ở các đầm phá và sườn ngoài rạn san hô. Thức ăn chủ yếu gồm động vật chân chèo phù du, nhiều loài tảo khác nhau, giun trùn (Echiuroids) và giun định khẩu (Sipunculoids). Loài hoạt động ban ngày (Ref. 113699). Loài đẻ trứng, có hiện tượng ghép đôi rõ rệt trong mùa sinh sản (Ref. 205). Trứng chìm ở tầng đáy và bám chặt vào giá thể (Ref. 205). Cá đực có tập tính canh giữ và quạt nước tạo oxy cho trứng (Ref. 205). Phân bố tại các đầm phá và sườn ngoài rạn san hô ở độ sâu từ 3 đến 38 m. Sống hội sinh với sáu loài hải quỳ tại Quần đảo Marshall. Thức ăn bao gồm thực vật, động vật không xương sống ở tầng đáy và sinh vật phù du (Ref. 237); động vật chân chèo, nhiều loài tảo khác nhau, giun trùn và giun định khẩu. Loài hoạt động ban ngày (Ref. 113699).
